MTL Barrister is a team of forward-thinking insurance defence counsel committed to dealing with the most challenging aspects of the insurance industry. The firm was founded by Michael T. Lax, who has dedicated his practice to the defence of insurance claims since 1990 and whose philosophy of the manner in which insurance claims ought to be defended guides the approach of the firm. What began as a traditional insurance practice has evolved into a practice which handles diverse and challenging claims. We pursue a collaborative approach in all manner of dealings with our clients. We are available for consultation, file handling and special projects. Our clients are those which generally tend to underwrite high risk policies and are often seen as vulnerable targets for claims. Our practices and strategies are geared toward best protecting our clients both on a general strategic level and specific claims basis. The early development of a blueprint on a matter ensures that the interests of the defence set the litigation agenda.

We offer a team of counsel with varying types and degrees of experience. As a general matter we handle claims arising from a variety of circumstances including those related to the rental and fleet markets, transportation industries, sporting accidents and facilities, amusement parks, property ownership and management together with the usual assortment of traditional claims. We now also service client needs by undertaking work on behalf of municipalities and professionals (insurance brokers, MGAs, engineers, investment dealers) as well as issues related to product liability, loss transfer, priority and coverage.

We are a selective practice. Furthermore, we are not a volume business. We are a team wholly dedicated to the needs of our clients. Indeed, we prefer to think in terms of a selection of relationships rather than a collection of clients. We are responsive and adaptive. We have successfully appeared in all levels of court.
